Android Pie or Android P or Android 9 Pie is the ninth major update of the Android operating system. Android 9 Pie was initially available for Google Pixel devices and the OnePlus 6. The Sony Xperia XZ3 was the first device with Android Pie pre-installed. Then in November 2018, Google released Android 9 Pie Go Edition which is the lite version of Android Pie. Also HMD Global pushed out the Android Pie update for Nokia 6.1 in Australia in November 2018

Android Pie is built on the three major tenets of Intelligence, Simplicity and Digital Wellbeing, with Nokia bringing all the core functions of the Android 9.0 (Pie) update to their Android One devices. Many Android phones are to follow the Android Pie Update and some of the features include:

  • Helps you get things done faster by predicting your next move and displaying the right action on your phone
  • Identifies relevant information about your favourite apps to make them more easily accessible when you need them
  • Uses deep learning to understand usage patterns and prioritise battery power on important apps
  • Automatically adapts phone brightness by learning from your interactions with different settings
  • Features a single home button that provides intelligent predictions and suggestions (user enabled)
  • New user interface for the quick settings menu.
  • The clock has moved to the left of the notification bar
  • Battery saver no longer displays an orange overlay on the notification and status bars.
  • A “Screenshot” button is available on the power options.
  • Have rounded corners across the graphical user interface.
  • Richer messaging notifications, where a full conversation you can hear within a notification, full-scale images, and smart replies akin to Google’s new app, Reply.
  • Redesigned volume slider, which is now located next to the device’s physical volume button.
  • The battery percentage is available in Always-On Display.
  • A new gesture-based system interface, similar to the one found on the iPhone X and other devices.
  • Redesigned, horizontal multitask app switcher with Google search bar and app drawer built-in.
  • A “Digital Wellbeing” feature which discourages excessive usage of your phone
  • A “Shush” feature launches Do Not Disturb mode when the phone is face down, only allowing notifications from starred contacts.
  • The Rotation Lock button indicates in the navigation bar if the device is in locked rotation mode.
  • Adds controller mapping for the Xbox One S wireless controller.
  • Multi-Camera Access is useful for accessing dual cameras for stereo-vision.
  • A new “Lockdown” mode disables biometric authentication activates, which disables once the user used their password to log in.

Sony Phones:  The Sony XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact, and if you have an Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, or XA2 Plus, you can expect Pie to land on March 4, 2019.

Google Pixel:  Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL and the Pixel and Pixel XL. The following phones joined Google’s Pixel and Pixel 2 family in supporting it:Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, OnePlus 6 and Essential PH‑1

Samsung series: Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ Samsung Note 9, Samsung S8 and S8+ and Galaxy Note 8

LG phones:  LG G7 ThinQ,  LG V30 and V30S, LG V20 and LG G6

Motorola Phones: Moto Z3, Moto Z3 Play, Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z2 Play, Moto X4, Moto G6 Plus, Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play

One Plus mobiles: OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6

Nokia Mobiles: Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco

HTC mobile: HTC U12+, HTC U11, HTC U11+ and HTC U11 Life (Android One version)
